Electric cars are becoming the future. As more consumers drop the pump for the plug, these car models might continue to proliferate at dealerships. Electric cars are eco-friendly, as they don’t disburse harmful emissions into the environment.

Every year, manufacturers release a new electric car model and expand the choices for consumers who want to live greener and cleaner. The top electric manufacturers are developing new exciting models, and some require wait lists or reservations. These are just some of the future electric cars that are expected to drive into dealerships:

  • Tesla Roadster
  • Tesla Cybertruck
  • Acura ADX
  • BMW i7
  • Electric Bentley models
  • Canoo Pickup
  • Fisker Pear
  • Ford F-150 Lightning

The List of New Models is Extensive

Multiple auto news outlets have published lists of expected new electric models. Some of these vehicles won’t drive into dealerships for years. However, the future of electric is becoming quite electrified with options.

Some manufacturers like General Motors are shifting to a fully electric inventory. Others are introducing new electric options into their lineup.

While it might be nearly impossible to highlight every possible electric model that’s in production or in development, there are a few really cool and unique options that could excited potential buyers.

Tesla Roadster

Tesla is currently accepting reservations for its upcoming Roadster model. The manufacturer expects that its Roadster will be the fastest electric vehicle available. The Roadster is estimated to reach top speeds exceeding 250 miles per hour.

The Roadster also is expected to have the longest range on the market. Tesla has released specs for the vehicle denoting an estimated range of 620 miles. This would beat the range of the Lucid Air Dream, which currently offers the longest range on the market (520 miles).

How much is the new Roadster? This vehicle isn’t for the budget buyer or perhaps the buyer with any type of budget for a vehicle. The estimated price tag for the Roadster is expected to be $200,000.

Those who wish to reserve a Roadster are required to put $50,000 down (minimum).

Tesla Cybertruck

As an April Fool’s Day gag, one auto site reported that the Tesla Cybertruck was officially cancelled. The joke was taken as fact by many, unfortunately.

The Cybertruck is still expected to become a reality. However, when it will officially hit the roads is anyone’s best guess. The Cybertuck is a unique and futuristic take on a classic pickup truck. The truck is expected to have a 500 mile range.

Acura ADX

Car and Driver reported that the name Acura ADX was trademarked in December 2021 (for the ADX nameplate). The car is expected to debut in 2024. No other details are available.

BMW i7

The i7 will be a completely electric luxury sedan. It will include a 31-inch theater screen with 8K resolution, and it will be compatible with Amazon’s Fire TV. The i7 also will include the Sky Lounge Panoramic LED Roof. BMW’s electric sedan will have an estimated range of 300 miles and is priced at $119,300.

Electric Bentley Models

Bentley also is going electric. The luxury manufacturer announced its Five By Five electric plan. The manufacturer will release five electric models, one per year beginning in 2025. Bentley eventually plans to go fully electric for its lineup. Details on the electric models were not released.

Canoo Pickup

Canoo is an electric manufacturer, and its pickup truck model is expected to debut in 2023. The pickup features a modern with a domed windshield and open bed. The truck is expected to have an estimated range of 200 miles and will be available in all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Interested buyers can pre-order their truck online.  Pricing information is not available.

Fisker Pear

Fisker has no information related to the Pear model except a form that allows interested buyers to pre-order a model. Car and Driver reports that the Pear will be a small SUV priced at around $30,000. It’s expected to be available in 2024. No details on range or other specs are available. Those who are interested in reserving a Pear can do so with $250 down.

Ford F-150 Lightning

The Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the country. The Lightning is the electric version of this popular model. The Lightning has an estimated range of 300 miles and is priced less than $40,000. It has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. However, those who haven’t already placed an order are out of luck. Ford is no longer accepting orders for the Lightning as the demand has been so high.

Electric Vehicles Available Now

Buyers who are interested in electric models will see more options in the future. However, the current offerings are still quite extensive. There are lower-priced electric vehicles for those on a tighter budget, but many manufacturers offer luxury electric models, too.

The least expensive electric vehicle on the market is the Nissan Leaf, which has a base price of $27,400. The Mini Cooper SE Electric Hardtop also is fairly low priced (for electric models) and has a base price of $33,900.

Those who don’t have a firm budget might look for the electric vehicles with the longest range. Currently, the Lucid Air Dream offers the longest range—an estimated 520 miles. The Lucid Air Dream has a base price of $169,000.

The best-selling or most popular electric vehicle on the market, though, is the Tesla Model S. The Model S was the 17th best-selling vehicle in 2021—172,700 were sold.

Tips for Shopping Electric

Shopping for electric vehicles might require a slightly different research process than shopping for a standard vehicle. While buyers will want to focus on a model that fits their budget, there are a few other specs that buyers might consider, including:

  • Range
  • Battery warranty
  • Applicable tax credits
  • Charging stations

Buyers who commute long distances for work might want to focus on the vehicle’s range. Again, the vehicle with the longest range is the Lucid Air, but some vehicles have much shorter ranges (like 100 miles). A short-range electric car might not be a practical investment for all drivers.

In addition, buyers also will want to research the warranty for the battery. Some manufacturers offer 10-year/150,000 mile warranties. This means that the battery is covered up to either the age milestone or the mileage milestone (whichever comes first).

The battery is expensive to replace for electric vehicles. For this reason, buyers might want to be sure the vehicle’s battery includes a decent warranty.

Some buyers also could assume that all electric vehicles are eligible for a tax credit. This isn’t the case. The tax credit for electric vehicles phases out. In fact, Tesla models are no longer eligible. Buyers considering an electric vehicle and hoping for a tax credit on their return should review the IRS’ website to find out if their vehicle is eligible.

Electric vehicles might come with an electric cord to charge the vehicle. These cords plug into a standard outlet and are often called ‘level 1 chargers.’ However, they are not the most efficient options. Car owners might need to charge their vehicle nightly to ensure their car doesn’t run out of power.

Level 2 chargers can be installed in a garage. However, these chargers are an extra investment. They are more efficient at charging a vehicle, though. Level 2 chargers require a higher voltage outlet, and not all homes can accommodate these chargers. This could mean that car owners need to hire an electrician to upgrade their home (another expense).

While there are many electric models on the market, buyers who are interested in these greener and eco-friendly vehicles might have even more choices in the next few years. As consumer interest in electric cars surges, more models will drive into the dealerships and become staples in many manufacturers’ lineups.
